A War Song, inizialmente chiamato A Soldier's Song, era una poesia scritta da Charles Flavell Hayward[1] e messa in musica dal compositore inglese Edward Elgar nel 1884.

Come A Soldier's Song, fu la prima canzone pubblicata da Elgar, che apparve su Magazine of Music nel 1890. Era dedicata a "F. G. P." (Frederick Pedley),[2] che aveva tenuto la sua prima esecuzione il 17 marzo 1884 durante una riunione del Worcester Glee Club presso il Crown Hotel, Broad Street, Worcester.
Nel 1903 fu ripubblicata da Boosey & Co. con il titolo A War Song, come Op. 5 di Elgar. La copertina della canzone mostra chiaramente "Op.5, No.1", ma non è noto alcun altro lavoro con numero di opus 5, anche se J.F. Porte nel suo libro che descrive le opere di Elgar elogia "i due pezzi che fanno parte dell'Opus 5."[3] Fu eseguita alla Royal Albert Hall il 1º ottobre di quell'anno.

- ^ Charles Flavell Hayward (1863-1906) nacque a Wolverhampton, in Inghilterra, da una famiglia di professionisti dello spettacolo. Era un attore, poeta, violinista, direttore d'orchestra, compositore e arrangiatore di musica. Era un amico di Elgar e suonava nella stessa fila dei violini. Suo padre Henry Hayward era un violinista noto come il "Paganini inglese". La famiglia emigrò in Nuova Zelanda dove lui, i suoi fratelli, le loro mogli e l'altra famiglia (nota come "La famiglia Bresciana") si guadagnarono da vivere col teatro, che includeva la novità di uno spettacolo cinematografico o bioscopio come veniva chiamato. Morì ad Adelaide, in Australia. La sua canzone più famosa (scrisse i testi e la musica) si chiama "Come back to me", che era cantata da sua sorella Florence Hayward.
