Description of the contribution

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

To carry out the assignment, the first task I completed was to add a brief presentation on my personal userpage, both in the Italian Wikipedia (Utente:Slidestar) and the English Wikipedia (User:Slidestar). Secondly, I decided to contribute to the following articles.

As for the articles about the town:

Articles about heritage

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

Firstly, as the Italian article about Ponte Coperto lacked sources and bibliography, I contacted the tourism office and the municipality of Pavia in order to ask for some information to an authoritative and respected stakeholder. I was told to contact the Musei Civici of the city and Dr. Tolomelli (who himself wrote some works about the bridge and the cultural heritage of Pavia) was kind enough to recommend some useful literary works and articles about the monument. Reading some of these documents, I was able to add some footnotes which can serve as sources for information that was already present on the page, but which could not be verified because of the lack of references. I have also added other works as general bibliography that can be useful to investigate the topic of Ponte Coperto even further. I have also added and corrected some details about the bridge, as the sources I read contrasted some of the information already present on the Wikipedia page. After adding bibliography and references, I followed the reccommendations of Prof. Pensa and removed the template (Template:F) which informed users of the fact that no sources were present in the article.

Secondly, I translated the section dedicated to the History of the bridge from the Italian to the English version of the Wikipedia article dedicated to it. Here, again, I added the necessary footnotes and some bibliography that I found consulting the Wikipedia article about the city of Pavia, as in its bibliography it mentioned some works which turned out to be interesting and useful for the specific topic of Ponte Coperto as well. I added some of the photgraphs that could be found on the Italian article too, as I believed these were representative of the most important aspects of the history of the bridge.

In both cases I contributed to the Discussion page as well, informing fellow contributers of the fact that I was working for this project and briefly describing the changes I had made in the article. The discussion pages I contributed to can be found here (IT) and here (ENG).

Articles about the town

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

To contribute to the Italian article about my village, Copiano (in the province of Pavia), I contacted the major in order to obtain the authorisation for the publication of a photograph taken by me of the war memorial present in the central square of the village. The authorisation (which I will send to Prof. Pensa via email) was written following the model offered by Wiki Loves Monument 2020 and later signed by the major. Once obtained, I uploaded the authorisation following the instructions of the WLM 2020 project, therefore creating a Wikidata page dedicated to it (Monumento ai Caduti di Copiano). I later uploaded a photograph of the memorial on Wikimedia Commons, (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Monumento_ai_Caduti_di_Copiano_(PV).jpg); the photo was geo-referenced and inserted in the Italian article dedicated to Copiano (in the section "Galleria d'immagini"), in the English article (in the infobox), and in the Wikidata page of the monument. I also updated demographic information by consulting the ISTAT website: I thus changed the data regarding the population of the village in the first line of the Italian article and the infobox of both the Italian and the English articles. I also updated the related footnotes. Finally, I added as a footnote the website of the village, as I believed it can be considered as a reliable source for the History section.

As for the English article, I translated the overview of the history found on the website of the municipality and I added the latter as a footnote as well.

I finally contributed to both the Italian and the English discussion sections to inform fellow users of the additions I have made.

Fallouts of the assignment

[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

For my articles, I decided to focus on both heritage and a town that I know well as they are, respectively, one of the key points of interest in the city of Pavia (the city where I was born), and the village I currently live in. The project which personally engaged me more was that of Copiano, as the mayor, whom I contacted directly, was enthusiastic about the initiative, asked me about the details of the project, eagerly signed the autorisation for the publication of the photograph and also talked about my initiative to other political representatives of our village and of the bordering ones. Hopefully, new information and media will be added, either by me or by other interested users, about these small communities.

The article about Ponte Coperto, however, was engaging too, as it allowed me to discover new and interesting information about the famous bridge. I also had the opportunity to talk to an expert (Dr. Tolomelli) who recommended the sources and provided me with useful information, and gave full availability in case of future need.

In conclusion, I personally found the assignment extremely interesting and useful, and I believe that I will probably continue contributing to Wikipedia articles in the future.
