Manuel Scimeca (Biologist)

Manuel Scimeca (...) è un biologo italiano. Manuel Scimeca (Roma 1983), biologist, PhD in “Medical Biotechnology and Translational Medicine”, researcher and adjunt professor at the University of Rome Tor vergata, the San Raffaele Telematic University and the “Saint Camillus International University of Health and Medical Sciences”. Co-founder of the university spin-off TMALab s.r.l. and the company OrchideaLab s.r.l.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The research activity of Dr. Scimeca is multidisciplinary with applications ranging from biomedical and biotechnological technologies to applied medical sciences with a focus on related translational research and its application. Fields of research include:

• the identification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers of atheromasic disease;

• the identification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers of neoplastic disease;

• the study of the prognostic role of ectopic calcifications;

• the chemical/physical characterization of ectopic calcifications;

• the study of mineralization processes both in bone and in ectopic sites;

• the characterization of the molecular processes related to bone-muscle degenerative diseases;

• Morphological-molecular adaptations of the skeletal muscle apparatus to physical exercise.

From a biotechnological point of view, the main research activity of Dr. Scimeca concerns the development and application of laboratory medicine methods associated with both light and electron microscopy. In particular, during the laboratory activities Dr. Scimeca developed technological approaches such as Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis, ultrastructural immunohistochemistry (immunogold labelling) and in situ hybridisation. Ultrastructural EDX microanalysis has been used to study the elemental composition of atheromasic and neoplastic calcifications (breast and prostate carcinomas) as well as for toxicological studies focused on the exploring the role of environmental pollution in both carcinogenesis and bone diseases. Ultrastructural immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization methods have been applied for the identification of new neoplastic biomarkers. These methods have been used to carry out numerous studies published in international journals.
