Ho annullato la modifica fatta da un anonimo secondo cui l'elezione risalirebbe al 154 con questa motivazione: "Non può essere stato eletto nel 155 se Policarpo nel 154 va a Roma per discutere con lui ed era già sul soglio petrino".
Policarpo di Smirne è probabilmente morto nel 156 e l'incontro è testimoniato da Ireneo di Lione (Contro le eresie, Libro III, 3.4); l'unica testimonianza sul papato di Aniceto è quella del Liber Pontificalis:
"Anicetus, by nationality a Syrian, son of John, from the Humisa,(4) occupied the see | = 9 years, 3 months and 3 days. | xz years, 4 months and 3 days. | He was bishop in the time of Severus (5) and Marcus, from the consulship of Gallicanus and Vetus (A.D. 150) until the year when Preesens and Rufinus were consuls."
