Descrizione
English: Drawing from radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi's 1896 US patent no. 586193, TRANSMITTING ELECTRICAL SIGNALS, showing his invention of the monopole antenna. Marconi invented the first practical radio transmitters and receivers around 1894. He initially used dipole antennas invented by Heinrich Hertz, which could not transmit beyond a few hundred feet. Around 1895 he discovered that if he attached one side of his transmitter and receiver to elevated metal sheet "capacity areas" shown here (u,w) and the other side to the Earth (E) he could transmit longer distances. These monopole antennas radiated vertically polarized radio waves of lower frequency, which traveled as ground waves which could follow the contour of the Earth, propagating beyond the horizon. Marconi's monopoles evolved into modern monopole antennas used by radio stations to transmit in the medium wave and longwave frequencies.
