bably trine. • At Chicago was exhibited the first kind of net used in Italy as lace ongarments. It is made of a very linelinen or silk mesh, stiffened with waxand embroidered in silk thread. It wasin use during the fourteenth century,and part of the fifteenth (Guide toKeia(ind Old Lace iti Italy, C. di Brazza,1893). This is probably the gramite,or trimmings of the albs, mentionedin the account book formerly belong-ing to the Cathedral of Ferrara. andnow preserved in the Municipal Ar-chives of that city. * See Milan. * Trina, like our word lace, is usedin a general sense for braid or passe-ment. Florio, in his Dictionary (AWorlde of Words, John Florio, Lon-don. 1598), gives Trine—cuts, snips,pincke worke on gannents ; and Trinci—gardings, fringings, lacings, etc., orother ornaments of garments. Merlo, merletto, are the more modemtenns for lace. We find the first as early as the poet Firenzuola (seeFlorexce). It does not occur in anypattern book of an older date than the Plate XI.

ITAL Y 47 Again, the Florentine poet, Firenzuola, who wrote from1520-30, composed an elegy upon a collar of raised point,made by the hand of his mistress. Cavaliere Merli cites, as the earliest known painting inwhich lace occurs, a majolica disc, after the style of the DeliaEobbia family, in which, surrounded by a wreath of fruit, isrepresented the half figure of a lady, dressed in a richbrocade, with a collar of white lace. The costume is of thefifteenth century ; but as Luca della Eobbias descendantsworked to a later period, the precise date of the work cannotbe fixed. Evidences of white lace, or passement, are said to appearin the pictures of Carpaccio, in the gallery at Venice, and inanother by the Gentile Bellini, where the dress of one of theladies is trimmed round the neck with a white lace.^ Thedate of this last painting is 1500.
