nthrough the valley of avalanches now bathed inwarm sunshine and, save for one or two frightenedhorses that we met, descended the numerous turnsand steep gradients and reached Chiavenna withoutmishap early in the afternoon, staying for a momentat the hotel to let them know that we had accom-plished their impossibility, in spite of such a hugeautomobile, as they had delighted to remark. TheMajola, another delightful climb from Chiavenna, wasimpossible as bad luck would have it. The frontierline of the Engadine passed well this side of thesummit, thus depriving us of a glorious drive. Backto the little lake we drove, speeding along its stillwaters beneath the hills and in due time joined theVal Tellina. FAREWELL TO THE ALPS ground and also in unbearable heat, for we haddescended 6500 feet and were in truth in sunny Italy. At Varenna we rested the night, its hotel, charm-ingly situated upon the edge of the lake, andsurrounded by beautiful gardens. That evening wedined upon the cool terrace above the still water.Now and then our table would be illuminated by thedazzling rays of the searchlight of the Italiansoldiers looking for smugglers upon the dark banks.The promontory of Bellaggio lying barely a mileaway, seemed to float upon the glassy surface; inthe distance the mountains rose up, a purple mirsigeof peaks ; sitting there in the open air, it was hardto realise, while gazing upon the perfect night, thatwe had the same day been fighting for life in thesnowstorm, almost frozen by the cold.
